The Churchill Centre will present its 2012 Leadership Award to Frederic V. Malek at a gala ceremony and dinner on Monday, April 30 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, D.C. The Award will recognize his forty years of service as an advisor to four United States Presidents and his leadership in both private industry and public philanthropy. Mr. Malek is Co-Chairman and Founding Partner of Thayer Lodging Group and a graduate of the United States Military Academy and the Harvard Business School.
Proceeds of the dinner will support the new National Churchill Library and Center to be established by The Churchill Centre and George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and the Centre’s other educational programs. Dinner Co-Chairs will be Catherine B. Reynolds, Chief Executive of the Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation, Rep. Jane Harman, President of the Woodrow Wilson International Center and Laurence S. Geller CBE, Chairman of The Churchill Centre and President and CEO of Strategic Hotels and Resorts Inc. The award will be presented by J.W. Marriott, Jr., Chairman of Marriott International, Inc. and a past Award recipient.
“This Award is a testament to how Fred Malek has dedicated his life and career to service to his country and to the principles of a free and democratic society.” commented Mr. Geller. “Fred’s contributions to American society have now entered their fifth decade and his service at the highest levels of our nation’s government has been matched by his accomplishments in private industry and leadership in the fields of lodging, real estate and private equity investment. Like Winston Churchill, Fred Malek knows that “Victory will never be found by taking the line of least resistance.”
Mr. Malek stated, “I am honored to receive the 2012 Leadership Award from The Churchill Centre, an organization that has done so much to preserve the legacy of one of history’s greatest statesmen. I am particularly pleased that the Award Dinner will help to support the new National Churchill Library and Center which will provide a long desired home for Churchill studies in our nation’s capital.”
Participants in the tribute to Fred Malek will include numerous prominent figures such as former Defense Secretary Frank Carlucci, Senator and former Defense Secretary William Cohen, Senators Norm Coleman, Tom Daschle and Trent Lott and former National Security Advisors Generals James Jones and Brent Scowcroft. Noted journalist Chris Matthews will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
